This month I tried to gather up posts on the theme of “collections” since the first post I wanted to share was Rogue Medic’s collection of podcasts and blogs. He has curated an excellent collection of blogs and podcasts to keep up with EMS and emergency medicine research.

You can eat better in 2012. Fire Engineering has a great article that connects nutrition with line of duty deaths. Learn how several New York State fire departments are changing their destiny through healthful cooking.

The Social Medic reminds us that “Basics” always matter. He points out that EMT Basics make up 2/3 of the EMS workforce, but too often conferences, CE, and more are focused on advanced providers. How are you going to make sure the basics matter in 2012?

In January I have been involved in many conversations about the importance of paramedics having a college degree. My friend Trevor, an expert in leadership and organizational behavior, reminds us that a degree doesn’t make one a leader. If leadership is not about the degree then what is it about?

Everyday EMS Athlete Brandon Mulnix is a minimalist shoe ultra marathon runner. He has just started a field trial of a minimalist work boot. I know people that collect shoes. Brandon collects shoes that are barely shoes, at least not in that same manner I define shoes.

The Edumedic accepted the 12 ‘n 12 Everyday EMS reading challenge and has posted the first of twelve book reviews. He started his challenge with one of my favorites, the Non-Conformist’s Guide to EMS Success.

Steve Whitehead, author of the Non-Conformist’s Guide to EMS Success ran a nice post about why we should all belong to NAEMT (Introducing the NAEMT). I belong. Do you? You should.

The Unwired Medic attended the Consumer Electronics Shows and picked lots of great products that have application to EMS. Read his collection of products and events at CES Day 1, CES Day 2, and CES Day 3.

In the midst of the NFL playoffs and at the height of Tebowmania many EMS bloggers wrote on the topic, “If Tim Tebow was a Paramedic.” At Medic Madness you can find a collection of all of the Tebow as a Paramedic posts.

With EMS Today a month away this post on 20 Ways to Connect After Conference from Christa Miller’s Blog.

Lifehacker shared a great collection of free online education courses in all of the big academic areas.

Finally, Mark Glencorse bid farewell to EMS earlier this month. You might be able to take Mark out the ambulance, but he will always be a paramedic. I appreciate his efforts as a tireless advocate for paramedics and promoting the possibilities to learn from one another. Thanks Mark.

“I am pursuing a BS in Health Administration degree at St. Joseph’s College New York. As part of a research seminar course I am conducting a survey of EMS providers’ relationships with work. This survey is open to all EMS providers who work and/or volunteer in the United States of America. The survey close date is June 25, 2010.”

Please join me and take a few minutes and answer the survey questions.

I commend Brian for pursuing a four year college degree while working as a paramedic. I am looking forward to the results of his research project and hopeful he will share them in a guest post for Everyday EMS Tips.

Higher Education for EMS professionals was the topic of EMSEduCast – the podcast by and for EMS educators – episode 63.

Are you thinking of a four year degree to advance your EMS career? What support, encouragement, and resources can I offer?

Episode 42 of the EMSEduCast – the podcast by and for EMS Educators – is a robust discussion about finding and using EMS research for education. The conversation features the regular co-hosts (Buck Feris, Greg Friese, and Rob Theriault) are joined by EMS Educators Bill Toon and Tim Noonan. We discuss important concepts, finding journals online and at … gasp … the library.

One of the wisest teachers I have ever had once told me “if you read 30 minutes a day of the literature in your field you will be in the top 10% of your field.” I totally believe those words of wisdom. As an EMS professional you should be regularly reading:

Professional and trade magazines like EMS Magazine and JEMS

Academic journals like Prehospital Emergency Care

Textbook chapters – being a peer reviewer of new EMS textbooks is a great way to stay up-to-date with textbook content without buying the text. (sometimes you even get paid)

EMS professional blogs. FYI Tim Noonan is the Rogue Medic. His EMS blog is one of the best. Subscribe to the RSS feed. Make sure to read his comment replies to readers that leave comments.

The EMSEduCast also has a journal club. Listen to the first meeting of the journal club and join us live January 6 for the next episode of the EMSEduCast journal club. We will be discussing literature related to cardiac arrest and ALS/BLS education.

This post is part of the 31 days of EMS continuing education series.

Have you ever responded to a call with information coming in like this? Multiple witnesses will call 911 for large incidents or those involving numerous patients. How do you determine the actual call location with multiple 911 callers? Every Day EMS Tip contributor Martha Bonnie has 3 R’s to help you locate and get to any incident safely and efficiently.

1. Respond. Your priority is to get to the patients. Determine the location while enroute with the information you are provided.

2. Reroute. Change direction or route of travel, if needed, while you are responding.

3. Research. Know your service area. Be familiar with mile markers on the highways. Keep maps, street name directories and other useful tools with you.

What are your secrets for finding emergency incidents when the incoming information is confusing. Share with Martha and our readers in the comments area.
