1. Content: Skype Conference Calls for Podcasting Tips – The EMSEduCast – the podcast by and for EMS educators – is recorded using Skype’s group calling features. Here are some tips to get high quality sound and minimize delays, echos, background noise, and other sound imperfections: Free up as much computer resources as possible by shutting down any other applications running on your computer.
2. Content: Podcast from PIOSocialMediaTraining.com – The first episode of the PIO Social Media Training podcast is available for listening and download at PIOSocialMediaTraining.com. Reasons to visit and listen: Learn about how emergency responders are using Social Media tools. Understand techniques to create and distribute social media content. Assess trends in social media use in 2010.
3. Connections: Generation Medicine Podcast – The first episode of the GenMed podcast is posted. Give a listen to this group of young medical professionals as they discuss the patient hand-off. The co-hosts of the Generation Medicine blog and podcast are four young medical professionals from Texas, Louisiana, Virginia, and Ontario that connected by social media and are now using social media.
4. Content: Grand Rounds Blog Carnival – My first submission to the Grand Rounds Blog Carnival has been accepted and was highlighted in yesterday’s Grand Rounds post at the CovertRationingBlog.com by Dr. Rich. My submission was a post from EverydayEMSTips.com – Do you ever go through the motions? I really appreciate Dr. Rich’s description of the post.
5. Idea: Equipment for Build Your Own Recording Studio – Ted Setla is a filmmaker (Setla Films) and paramedic. He is passionate about EMS professionals use video to inform and entertain. I first connected with Ted after watching his film Level Zero-the documentary film about Alameda County EMS. I am now supporting his efforts to create the Chronicles of EMS series about paramedic and by paramedics.

Chronicles of EMS is a reality series that takes a look at how social media and the EMS Industry are coming together to provide realtime communication, the sharing of best practices and how paramedics from around the world are able to share ideas, thoughts and dreams on how to improve our industry as whole. The pilot episode is being filmed by Setla Films in San Francisco and features Justin Schore and Mark Glencorse.

For EMS professionals education is ongoing. Although education and training are needed for refresher and relicensing requirements, is also important to always be learning because medicine is dynamic. What we do now we might not do in the future. Some of what we did in the past (15 compressions and 2 breathes) we don’t do anymore.

An important part of being a lifelong adult learner is understanding how you learn best. This week at EPS411.com two articles were posted about using learning styles inventories. And remember, since EMS learning occurs in all domains – cognitive, psychomotor, and affective – you can’t limit yourself to learning just in your preferred style. Any given training topic may require you to learn with multiple styles.

Understanding how you learn will be part of the August 12 EMS Boot Camp Session. I have been gathering tips and ideas to help EMT and Paramedic students prepare for certification classes. As I have compiled tips I have come to believe that all EMS professionals could benefit from this session, especially other EMS educators. I have talked to more than a dozen EMS instructors to learn how they help their students prepare to excel in the classroom.
