Everyday EMS Tips readers, November 9 at midnight is the deadline for submitting an application to present at the 2010 National Association of EMS Educators symposium in Chicago, Illinois. Here are three Everyday EMS Tips reasons for you to apply to present:

1. Everyone is an expert at something. As an educator what can you share? What do other educators ask you to teach or explain to them?

2. Teaching your peers is a significant and rewarding professional challenge. Explaining how to teach what you teach will improve your skills as a teacher.

3. NAEMSE presenters are invited to a special faculty only event. Year in and year out this is one of the most fun events I attend at any conference.

Learn more about the symposium at NAEMSE.org. Also check out my posts for EMS educators from the 2009 NAEMSE Symposium.

Have an idea for a NAEMSE presentation and want my feedback? Just shoot me an email.

We will also show you how you can use a game to deliver information effectively to your audience while keeping them engaged in the learning process.

Although education and training are needed for refresher and relicensing requirements, is also important to always be learning because medicine is dynamic. What we do now we might not do in the future. Some of what we did in the past (15 compressions and 2 breathes) we don’t do anymore.

An important part of being a lifelong adult learner is understanding how you learn best. This week at EPS411.com two articles were posted about using learning styles inventories. Do you know your preferred style? Take a few minutes to read the EPS411.com posts and determine your preferred learning style.

And remember, since EMS learning occurs in all domains – cognitive, psychomotor, and affective – you can’t limit yourself to learning just in your preferred style. Any given training topic may require you to learn with multiple styles.

Understanding how you learn will be part of the August 12 EMS Boot Camp Session. I have been gathering tips and ideas to help EMT and Paramedic students prepare for certification classes. As I have compiled tips I have come to believe that all EMS professionals could benefit from this session, especially other EMS educators. I have talked to more than a dozen EMS instructors to learn how they help their students prepare to excel in the classroom. You don’t want to miss the tips I am going to share Join me and Jim Hoffman for the next session of EMS Boot Camp. Even if you can’t join us live, register to receive access to the session recording.
